Galeism: Normative Choreographies in the Public Space

Le Galéisme:  multimedia performance by Benjamin Efrati

Nuit Blanche Kyoto 2018, Yôkai Soho, in Exercice for Death 2, curated by Naoki Miyasaka.

Normative Choreographies in the Public Space is the first public presentation of Galeism. In this multi-media performance, Benjamin Efrati re-appropriates pictograms found in the public space and transforms them into the very first Galeist dance choreography. Through the embodiment of the Galeist attitude toward social norms, the performer opposes traditional dualism and underlines the absence of border between presence and absence, animality and abnormality, art and non-art.

Nomadic Grids – Think Tank #1

Nomadic Grids – Think Tank #1: exhibition organised by Benjamin Efrati, Shu Isaka, Hitoshi Takeuchi

Guest artists: Fuyumi Murata, Naoki Miyasaka, Mitsuo Yamamoto, Marie B. Schneider

0-title: Nomadic Grids

1-humans make a distinction between space and time

2-processes which are too slow or too small are unnoticeable

3-processes which are too fast or too big are unfathomable

4-the game of go is one example of this paradigm

5- it uses a grid to represent space and stones to represent actions in time

6-stones can be considered to be cells in the living organism of the game

7-some parts, aspects and dimensions of reality remain missing

8-in order to generate their representation new models are needed

9-we call for new conventions of space and time

10-we call for nomadic grids

1 -we know existence is not born from a conventional grid space

2-we know it because we know the universe is discrete

3-reductive mathematical grids are rational and miscalculate the real world

4- exhibitions are like a laboratory for recalculation

5-the interactivity with the audience is necessary

6- such a laboratory must be pluralistic and nomadic
7- in laboratories, experiments are regarded as small scale of physical reality.
8-nomadic grids are generated without downscaling reality in time and space

9-they are n-dimensional and functionally variable

10-the experience of board games enables alternative uses of the grid

11-using deviant grids leads us to the cracks in the grid system

12- this enables the exploration of different closed circuits like a warp portal

1-Think Tank #1 basically, it’s an exhibition about the fourth dimension

2-Think Tank #1 is the first application of the Nomadic Grids protocol

3-Think Tank #1 is throwing a party on saturday 2018.09.29, you’re invited

4-Think Tank #1 brings together 10 participants from diverse backgrounds

5-Think Tank #1 is also an open call to potential collaborators

Checkmate vs Atari

Mat vs Atari is a performance by Benjamin Efrati and Fabien Fromont. It will be presented at the FRAC Normandie-Rouen on October 14 , 2018.

What is the relation between Tai Chi and Marcel Duchamp? Obviously, it is the game of go, as the antithesis of chess which have been the main obsession of Marcel Duchamp from birth to death. The macroscopic motion designed on the boards of these strategy games are regulated by fixed poses, which in animation cinema are called “in-between frames”. The choreographies from which the practice of Tai Chi is built follow the same protocol.

The myths of duchampology cover both the semantic gaps in his work and the exegesis of minute biographical shades. Duchamp is deemed worthy of the title of universal genius of the avant-gardes by many art critics. Was life really a game for  the emotionally detached artist described in the myth?

Gnozo – [Capitalist Alienation] \\ Debut album online!

Gnozo is a post-media performance project by Benjamin Efrati. As far as one knew, it was just another youtube channel full of japanese insanities and nice landscapes. From now on, the rules change: Gnozo is a one-man-band! Playing over 87 instruments simultaneously in each show, this unpredictable trickster just published his first EP on bandcamp: western-electricity, prehistorical electronics, turkish-hungarian style downtempo-trap-dubstep ; it has psychedelic power and ambiant explosions. Listen, and if you like, support the artist!

XenoFragmenter: Become the Other

Thanks to Fragmenter’s engine, developed by Balazs Keszegh’s Long Title Productions,  a new tool has been created that enables its user to fragment their own identity: the XenoFragmenter, which is a collective self-portrait animating tool. This project has been developed for the Bible of XenoXenism, an interactive installation containing an animated short, an interactive sound installation and XenoFragmenter.

The Identity Fragmenter (also known as XenoFragmenter) is a program which enables the user to produce a representation of their evolutionary past. Most people carry Neanderthal DNA, which is an adaptive gene pool. XenoFragmenter lets you see yourself and invites you to set your face in front of a webcam in order to Neanderthalize you. The Sapiens mode enables fine adjustments of the face in front of the camera, and displays the faded version of the animation produced collectively in the installation.

Once you press the Neanderthalize button, you can capture the desired expression on your face: the one you want to work on. When the picture is taken, you can copy the XenoFeatures of your face and add  details, elements or accessories. If you wish to restart the drawing, you can erase your drawing; if you wish to confirm and add the drawing to the series of self-portraits made by others, confirm.

XenoFragmenter shows you three images of yourself: the one you are used to, the Neandethalized version, and your visual interpretation of that version. By fragmenting your identity between normative representation, uncanny reflection and personal interpretation, the user gets time to think about their evolutionary roots and the misinterpretation of humanity which produces the phenomenon of discrimination which can present itself, among other things, as racism or homophobia.

The test session has been held in Juranyi, Budapest (Hungary), under the vigilance of Zsuzsana Kreif and Balazs Turai.
